100 Friends is the first book in a new series for beginning readers, in which seven-year- old Warren Reginald Nesbitt is the main protagonist. Warren has a twin sister, Ellie, but the main plot and action revolves around Warren. The family is in the midst of moving to a new town, and Ellie challenges Warren to make one hundred new friends in his new school. To date, Warren only has one friend, his stuffed dragon that has taken on an imaginary life of its own. At his new school, after a number of unsuccessful attempts at friendship which will resonate with elementary students, Warren finally realizes that one good friend is worth more than a hundred. Written in straightforward prose, and easy dialogue, with some picture support, this beginning chapter is aimed at emergent readers. The novel includes characters that are ethnically diverse, and families of a non-traditional make-up.
