In At the Pond exquisite full-page water colour illustrations, dominated by countless shades of green, capture the magic of a backyard goldfish pond. Very limited text directs the young reader to a few details (“two fish, three fish”), but the real enjoyment comes in the discovery of more pond flora and fauna on every full-page, two-page colour spread – an evolving lily pad flower, several watchful green frogs, a mourning dove, insects, and a swooping heron that sends all diving for cover. When the danger is past the cycle can start again…
End notes give an adult some additional facts on the eight pond dwellers and visitors to add to the discussion that is bound to be sparked by this joyful portrayal of an experience familiar to many young children.
A lovely, simple text to share with beginning readers in Kindergarten and Grade One, but it will be the pictures that capture their attention and imagination!
