The Farm is a visually appealing informational, read-aloud, picture book for young children. Alain Grée, renowned French artist and illustrator, has produced over 300 children’s books with translations into twenty languages. Grée uses the story of Max and Mary’s trip to the family farm to help young children discover where their food comes from. Children will hear about the animals and their care, crops and how they are grown, and the process that takes them from the farm to the table. The informational text is organized under bold chapter-like headings. At times, Grée uses a sequence of pictures to illustrate a process (e.g. making bread); illustrations of foods are clearly labelled in large font, and there are questions and quizzes embedded in the text to encourage participation and discussion.
Grée is known for his signature, classic, vintage style artwork that has a child-like, folk art feel to it that will appeal to children and adults alike. He uses bright, primary colours for his lively rural scenes of life on the farm, and a cast of characters that is multigenerational and ethnically diverse.
A timeless picture book to use in conjunction with themes about the farm, foods, and nutrition in Early Education, Kindergarten and Grade 1.
