Hatke’s new graphic novel has all the attributes of a winner! From a strong girl lead (refreshingly non-Caucasian) to robots, to adventure story, Hatke creates a (mostly) wordless graphic novel that celebrates adventure, friendship and innovation! A young girl, left behind when others are off at school, explores the local junk yard. There, she finds a tool belt and a new friend, a little robot who has been lost from a top-secret facility not far away. They explore happily, until the robot decides to leave to find others of his kind, unaware that the evil robots of the factory are already searching for him. The little girl, whose name we never discover, wants her friend to stay, and tricks him into a cage, while she tries to build new robots to keep him company from the scraps at the yard. Her attempts fail, and she has to decide whether to keep her friend caged or let him go. Then the evil robots come and an adventure begins as they try to outwit their attackers. Left behind, unsuccessful creations come to life, and come to the aid of the pair. Younger readers will be charmed at the colourful, soft illustrations that tell the story without the need of words, while older readers will enjoy the fast-paced storyline
