This is the first book in a new graphic novel series aimed at the younger reader who wants to explore this genre but is not interested in super heroes or futuristic worlds.
Written by Aron Steinke, himself a Grade Four and Five teacher, Steinke draws on his own experiences with students, their behaviours and curricula. The seventeen student characters in Mr. Wolf’s Grade Four class are all slightly bizarre animals caricatures with wide eyes, large smiles and modern dress. They get into the usual mischief and nonsense that is typical of an elementary school setting, and readers will quickly identify themselves or friends who might be similar…the one who plays jokes, the one always in a hurry to the bathroom, the student who falls asleep in class, the antics at recess and on the school bus. Young readers, and reluctant readers, will have the background knowledge to comprehend the text, make connections, and enjoy the humour and chaos that Steinke injects into these familiar school experiences.
