Rocks and Minerals (Level 2 – see description below) is an excellent non-fiction text for emerging readers, exhibiting all the features that will help them organize and locate information easily (Contents, Glossary, Index, bold headings). In addition, each page has captioned photographs, excellent diagrams, plus a text box with the phonological pronunciation of the vocabulary – igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary.
Scholastic Publishing is developing this new series, Discover More Readers – levelled non-fiction readers with simple text and sentence structures to suit our emerging readers in grades one to three. At this point, there are 4 titles at the Level 1 stage (200-500 words, and very simple sentences structures); 8 titles at Level 2, ( sentence structures are slightly more complex, and the number of words increases to 1200); Level 3 readers are more challenging (up to 1800 words and more sentence complexity). The series will be a good addition to elementary libraries looking to bolster their number of readable non-fiction texts for Division 1. Each book comes with a code that allows a student to access digital resources that extend the book with quizzes, videos, plus more pictures and facts related to the subject.
Rocks and Minerals, will complement the Grade 3 Science unit: Rocks and Minerals. Other curriculum related titles in this new series include: Fantastic Frogs, Busy Butterflies.
