This is the second in the “Sam the Man” series for young readers, especially boys, who are starting beginning chapter books. While doing a project for his Grade 2 Science class, Sam learns a lot about growing vegetables, composting, nutrition, and problem solving. There are humourous incidents that will amuse young readers. Initially, Sam is not happy about the project that requires him to “adopt” a rutabaga, write a letter to it, and look after it. As he learns more, his feelings change. Young readers will be able to relate to, and share, Sam’s relationship issues with teachers, classmates, family and senior friends. The author has developed characters that are realistic and ethnically diverse. A full-page black and white illustration in each chapter enhances the text and portrays the diverse ethnicity of the characters. Simple text, and double-spaced larger font will support readers of this beginning chapter book.
