Doreen Cronin, familiar for her favourite picture books, such as “Diary of a Worm”, has branched out into beginning novels for young readers. The detective agency known as The Chicken Squad is made up of four yellow, furry siblings who set out to solve some barnyard mysteries. Features that make the series appealing for young readers include: large, double-spaced easy-to-read type and font, many full page illustrations and smaller illustrations on almost every page, familiar high frequency words, short chapters, primarily simple sentence structures with some vocabulary that is challenging without being overwhelming. In this adventure, The Case of the Weird Blue Chicken, the squad solves the mystery for the “little blue bird” whose house has been taken over by another bird and an angry squirrel. The squad investigates and has a surprise in store. To note: At two points in the story, measurements are referred to in feet and inches, so may need some explanation for our students.
