Voices from the Wild – An Animal Sensagoria

Reviewed by:

How does a hummingbird use its sense of taste? How does a moose use its sense of touch? Questions answered in “Voices from the Wild ヨ an animal sensagoria”. This 2014 edition is a reissue of Canadian poet and writer, David Bouchard’s, original work, and is now in a standard picture book size. Bouchard’s poems describe 25 featured animals, 20 of which are Canadian. He uses precise descriptive details and stunning figurative language to describe how each animal uses one of the five senses to survive in the wild. The 25 poems are organized in five “chapters” ヨ one for each of the senses. (e.g. Bald Eagle ヨ Sight; Grizzley Bear ヨ Smell: Mountain Goat ヨ Touch, etc.) Using free verse, organized in 4-8 line stanza’s, Bouchard does not reveal the identity of the animal directly, but offers clues through the description, making this an excellent vehicle for teaching inference. The poems are all written in the first person, allowing the voice of each animal to be clearly heard. Ron Parker’s exquisite, full page or two-page spread oil paintings capture the mood of the poem and the beauty of each natural habitat. This book is a stunning resource for demonstrating voice in writing, free verse in poetry, descriptive writing, figurative language, inference, sentence variety and complexity, and visual art. End notes provide a short, factual description of each of the animal characters.
