You Hold Me Up – Ki Kîhcêyimin Mâna

Reviewed by:

Monique Gray Smith continues to publish books that appeal to a wide audience and to encourage the theme of reconciliation and resilience.  Together with artist, Danielle Daniel, she has created a picture book for a very young audience, with a powerful message that applies to all ages.  The simple text, in large size font, is written in both Plains Cree and English on one page, accompanied by full-page, brightly coloured acrylic and gouache illustrations on the facing page.  The title is a repeated refrain accompanied by explicit actions…e.g “you hold me up …when you comfort me…when you listen to me…”  The message is deceptively simple, acknowledging the simple ways in which relationships can guide, support, encourage growth, resilience, positive self-esteem and independence.

Daniel’s stylized characters are bold, vibrant, and multi-generational.  They evoke a positive, reflective mood along with the spirit of respect and community.

In her author’s note Smith writes: “I wrote it {You Hold Me Up} to remind us of our common humanity and the importance of holding each other up with respect and dignity.  I hope it is a foundational book for our littlest citizens.  A book that encourages dialogue among children, their families, their care providers and their educators.  At its heart, it is a book about love, building relationships and fostering empathy.”

A highly recommended addition to your library’s dual language and FNMI collections.
