Every individual matters.
Every individual has a role to play
Every individual makes a difference. Jane Goodall
This lyrical prayer for peace is written by well-known naturalist, Jane Goodall, who asks us each as humans to pray for peace, while taking responsibility and action in ways that will bring positive changes in our natural world. Goodall’s prayer to ‘the Great Spiritual Power’ opens this book to be read and interpreted by people by many religions, speaking of the universal longing/prayer of people for peace. The richly coloured fluid illustrations gives a sense of both earthly and heavenly presence, by Iranian artist Golmohammadi. The deliberate joining of both a western and eastern voice through words and images work together to craft a powerful prayer, that will speak to readers throughout the world. Readers will be inspired by this prayer that could be used to help youth think and talk about peace, on the International Day of Peace.
Jane Goodall’s comments at the end of the book, including information about her organizations may motivate youth to take action in ways that can have influence in the world for peace. She is the UN Messenger of Peace, as well as the founder of Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) that supports programs of ongoing research with chimpanzees and the Roots & Shoots conservation and humanitarian program that funds hands-on projects by young people involving animals, local communities and the environment.
This is a suitable book for teaching young people grades 4-12 about Remembrance Day and/or International Day of Peace. It would also be a good introduction to a biographical study of Jane Goodall’s life work.
