Wicked Thing, A

Reviewed by:

Aurora wakes up with a kiss 100 years after falling asleep only to discover her family and friends are long gone, her kingdom is on the brink of civil war, and she is expected to marry a complete stranger. As Aurora tries to deal with her grief and learn about both her new world and responsibilities the King and Queen try to manipulate her to their own ends while the people of the kingdom see Aurora as a beacon of salvation and expect her to make their lives better.  Crumbling under the pressure that being “Sleeping Beauty” brings Aurora starts to make nightly trips to the village where she meets Tristan, a rebel that wants better things for the kingdom not matter the cost to innocent lives.  On the day of her wedding a violent encounter between rebels and guards breaks out and in all the confusion Aurora escapes into the forest where she hopes to be “nothing but herself”.  In A Wicked Thing Thomas takes up where the happily-ever-after should be in Sleeping Beauty and shows that sometimes happily-ever-after is a lie. Though there is little done in regards to the development of the world of Alyssinia, the marvelous cast of characters that is presented more than makes up for it.  Aurora in particular is a truly wonderful character as she is not only believable but relatable as well; she not just a one dimensional princess in need of rescue; she can rescue herself (at least once she was woken up).  Lovers of both fairytales and fantasy will both adore this book.
