As an Oak Tree Grows: A Slice of History

Reviewed by:

From 1775 to the present, the landscape around the lone oak tree goes through significant changes, as does the tree itself. This book is great to use for the Change Over Time concept in social studies, which is really aimed at giving students a start at historical thinking. Books about trees are very good at helping us teach Change Over Time since they change slowly over long periods of time, while the seasons and the people and their surroundings change much more quickly. Books like this are also very good at showing the continuity of life, because the tree usually falls and is replaced by a new seedling, in this case, brought down by lightning.
