At Grandpa’s Sugar Bush

Reviewed by:

This picture book is not a recent publication, but if not part of your library collection, it is worth considering for its focus on a special Canadian tradition. This picture book shares an endearing story of a boy and his grandfather on their annual adventure to an Ontario sugar bush, where they are making maple syrup in the most traditional way, over an open outdoor fire. Told in narrative style with beautiful descriptions of the bush in late winter, the woodland animals, and an accurate account of the lengthy process that a farmer follows from the time he taps the first tree with a spile until the time, many days later, when the syrup is ready for the table. Wilson’s exquisite oil-on-board illustrations capture the magic of the woodland, particularly in moonlight, the laughter and camaraderie of the boy and his grandfather as they share the work and its rewards.
