Cats is one of her recent non-fiction books for emergent readers by Edmonton author, Joan Marie Galat, and published by National Geographic Kids under their “You Read; I Read” series.  This book, with interesting facts about cats large and small, invites young readers at a late grade one reading level to access the text on one side of the page, and asks an adult to read the more challenging text on the facing page.  This encourages a shared reading activity that will give confidence and enjoyment to beginning readers.  Cats is organized with good non-fiction text features (Table of Contents, short chapters with bold headings, plus numerous colour photographs that support the text on every page).  At the end of each chapter, the author poses a question or a quiz that will engage thinking in the young reader, and offer a chance for dialogue and discussion with his or her adult reader.
