Circle of Stones

Reviewed by:

Catherine Fisher, the first Young People’s Laureate for Wales, writes an intriguing standalone fantasy, originally published as “Crown of Acorns” in the U.K. in 2010. The mysterious King’s Circus, a circular street of thirty houses modeled on druidic magic, in Bath England, provides the hub for three intertwining stories, told in different fonts and distinctly stylized narratives. Sulis, a contemporary teen struggling from a past that is controlling her, Zac, an eighteenth century architect’s apprentice obsessed with Druids, and Bladud, a prehistoric leprous king who discovers the healing waters of Aquae Sulis and builds the first Stone Circle, are mystically linked together. Like the perfect circle of houses or stones, the themes and images of their tales constantly mirror each other in this haunting mystery-thriller.
