Counting Crows

Reviewed by:

“One, two, three, crows in a tree. Three roly poly bugs, three ripe mangos, three for the counting crows, by jango!”
So begins Applet’s take on counting picture books. With light, lyrical rhymes, the counting crows crunch and munch their way up to twelve. While students will enjoy the rhyming text and the foods the crows find (crunchy crickets, spicy ants, salty peanuts), it’s the illustrations that make this book a winner. Dunlavey’s crows are all eyes, legs and beaks, wearing bright oversized red and white striped sweaters. Placed against a soft white background, they pop out and take over. Other necessary additions such as trees, powerlines are penciled in lightly, ensuring the crows have centre stage.¬†With their eyes rolling and the angle of their heads, they express curiosity, wonder and playfulness. A fresh and whimsical new addition to your counting books. K-1
