Beloved tales from Aesop and others
Fables, both classic and modern, are retold by twenty-six different graphic storytellers in this book, which is a companion graphic book to Nursery Rhyme Comics and Fairy Tale Comics. The variety of subject and illustrative style invites the reader to browse through the fables. Some morals are clearly stated while others may need further discussion/interpretation for younger readers to synthesize the story with the moral. The vocabulary varies from simple to complex depending upon the story. One’s visual literacy and acquity are needed to fully comprehend some of the fables. It is uncertain whether this book should be placed with graphic novels or comics in a library.
The artwork varies greatly, using many different art techniques. Each unique artistic style of every storyteller is evident in reading their story. The change in graphic illustrations varies from one fable to another, which be a continuous delightful surprise to readers. Some illustrations are clear and use crisp colours while others are more fluid and use paler colours. A list of the graphic storytellers/authors is found at the back of the book, with a brief annotation about each author.
This will be a welcomed addition to elementary and junior high libraries and/or a suitable gift for fans of graphic novels/literature, as it introduces students to classic literature in a format that is appealing and of interest to today’s young readers. As with most fables, they make for good examples of positive Character Education traits. Young writers may enjoy creating their own unique comic of a fable after reading this book.
