It looks like it’s starting out exactly the same…as last year.
AJ’s school year begins much like it did the year before. His two best friends have had an exciting summer while he simply read ten books at the library. Also, he is still invisible to Nia, the girl he has a crush on forever. Miraculously, he is paired up with his dream girl, for a group project about Transylvania by his new teacher, Mr. Niles, AJ turns up his plans for winning Nia over. By dressing up as a vampire, including fake blood, he hopes to enchant Nia, as she is fascinated by vampires. He finds himself in real trouble when Nia attacks him with a stake, believing he is a real vampire. As their knowledge about vampires and Transylvania increases, AJ and Nia start to believe there may be a real vampire amongst them after all. The side story of his competitive best friends adds to the fun of being in middle school. This hilarious coming-of-age story is a spoof on the Vampire genre and pokes fun at vampires, real or imaged. The fun loving illustrations are colourful. The noses of the characters are somewhat ill shaped, making the them appear stiff like and not human like.
Highly recommended for Grades 4-8
