Fascinating: The Life of Leonard Nimoy

Reviewed by:

He was a boy who became a legend.
This story of an immigrant’s child who was inspired to follow his dreams is about well-known Leonard Nimoy (Spock) from the Star Trek television series and movie sequels.   Beginning with his school performance of “God Bless America”, Lenny draws from his Jewish heritage and life as an alien immigrant from Russia, to develop his photography, singing and acting career.  The development of the Spock character, including his Vulcan ‘V’ greeting and saying, “live long and prosper” is deeply rooted in ancient Hebraic beliefs and traditions.
The author of this book, a gallerist and close friend of Leonard Nimoy, pays tribute to a friend and role model for inspiring artists.  The dark, stark illustrations match the solemnness of the beloved but often misunderstood Spock character whom he is best known for. The endnote pages, titled ‘The Rest of History’ explains his awards, and other artistic endeavors, including a prolific career as an author/photographer, activist in politics and philanthropist of visual arts.
Suitable for a study of biographies, performing and visualartists, and inspiration for students of all ages who dare to dream of what they can become, drawing upon their rich heritage and beliefs to guide them.  Well suitable for grades 4-12 for Alberta’s Health: curriculum: Life Roles & Career Development.
