Holi Hai! Holi Hai!
This is a sweet tale of how modern day families celebrate Holi, a traditional Indian festival of colours. Young readers follow the main characters, Chintoo and Mintoo as they get ready for the celebration, by gathering different coloured flowers, drying them, and grinding them into fine powders. As the community prepares for the festival, the two young siblings gather in a cloud of purple pops, red bursts, orange eruptions and blue splashes to celebrate fresh starts, friendship, and forgiveness. The author’s note at the end of the book explains a bit more detail about the Holi festival. The vibrant colours used throughout the book highlight the joyfulness and excitement leading up to the Holi celebration.
Suitable for a read aloud with primary children learning about family customs and traditions in the Alberta Grade 1 Social Studies: My World; My Home, My School and My Community and Grade Three Social Studies: World Communities (India).
