“If you happen to have a dinosaur…in winter, it’s a snowplow.” Young children will have little difficulty imagining what it would be like to have a dinosaur for a pet. The illustrations are cartoon-like, created digitally, with crisp colours. The family who are part of this story harken from the 1950s or 60s, in their style of dress & hair styles, home decor, and use of ‘technology.’ There is a subtle message that reading provides knowledge and enjoyment, as the family is portrayed reading different genres of books. Young children will have fun naming the different dinosaurs encountered throughout the book. Best of all, is the invitation for young writers to envision what it would be like to have other animals around their homes, encouraging them to use their imaginations to write their own story. This book is a great fit for the 6+1 Writing Traits program for developing ‘Ideas’. It is book by a Canadian author/illustrator team that will continue to enchant young readers from K-2.
