Jane, the fox & me

Reviewed by:

Jane, The Fox & Me is beautiful both in illustration and in its honest portrayal of a young girl’s response to the bullying she must endure and the depression it causes. At the beginning of the story H̩l̬ne is being bullied about her body and has taken the insults to heart, truly believing she is fat or as she calls herself a sausage . The illustrations are all done in grey tones conveying to the reader her bleak outlook on the world. But when H̩l̬ne reads Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, which is her way of escaping reality, the page is filled with bright colors and even the font changes. It isn’t until H̩l̬ne meets the fox that there is any color at all in her world and this small happiness is cruelly ripped away by her classmate causing H̩l̬ne to feel that nothing and no one will ever want to be around her. But as H̩l̬ne slowly makes friends with G̩raldine after months of being alone and isolated by others, H̩l̬ne’s world starts to brighten though the grey doesn’t entirely disappear. As mentioned before this graphic novel is honest and nowhere is that more apparent than in the ending because H̩l̬ne’s life isn’t all of a sudden perfect because she has a friend; it has certainly improved but there are still bullies and body issues that H̩l̬ne will have to deal with. This novel is a must read for girls whether they are the bullied or the bully.
