The buzzer blows. Are you set?
Slap the shot.
It’s an open….
Filled with slapstick humour and rhyming fun, this introductory book about hockey skills, vocabulary, and rules, is a great read aloud or re-read by young children who enjoy reading about Canada’s favourite game. Each two-page spread provides both visual and written clues as to the keywords (in bold, capitalized font) which will follow on the same, opposing or the following page. For new Canadians/immigrants unfamiliar with the game of hockey, this provides a very basic introduction to a game that may be foreign to them.
The colourful, large illustrations and cartoon-like drawings make this book easy to read, often giving clues as to the hockey concept being introduced. Each character’s facial expression is uniquely expressive, including that of the players, referees and spectators make it all that more humorous and enjoyable. The mixed team of boys and girls playing on the same hockey team sends a subtle message that gender is not an issue in pursuing sports.
A great read-aloud for preschool, kindergarten and grade one students, as well as a good gift to an aspiring young hockey player. Physical education teachers may wish to use this book as a means of introducing the rules and skills before prior to starting hockey skills in gym class.
