Malala: A brave girl from Pakistan; Iqbal: A brave boy from Pakistan

Let us not pray to be sheltered from dangers, but to be fearless when facing them.
This book combines two biographies together in one book, figuratively meeting together in the middle of the book.  Malala’s story is more well known, especially since she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.  Iqbal’s story, is remembered by the author for his obituary in 1995, when he was shot for his support in denouncing child labour.  True to the author’s other simply told biographies, she explains only the key events in a manner which can be understood by mid-elementary school children. These biographies  inspire hope and champion bravery.  Her gentle retelling of horrific events through the use of simple, crisp language and brightly coloured illustrations introduces young children to social justice issues. The direct quotes in red font adds to the powerfulness of a child’s voice.  The author’s note at the beginning of both stories explains the events in more detail as well as her motivation for writing these biographies.

This book is ideal for teaching about current events for Alberta Social Studies: grade 3 (quality of life) and Grade 6: Government:HumanRights.  Children may be directed to read more detailed biographies about Malala and Iqbal. It is strongly suggested that this book be introduced to elementary aged children with an adult because of its’ topic.
