Memory Tree, The

Reviewed by:

“Fox closed his eyes, took a deep breath and fell asleep forever.” Fox’s friends come to mourn, remember and share their memories of fox, a beloved friend. The death of fox during winter, follows the natural world order. A small tree grows overnight in the snow where fox had died. In the years to come, the animals use the tree for shelter and remember Fox forever. This helps young readers view death as miraculous and mysterious as life itself, though older readers may find the growth of a tree in winter defies the law of the natural world. Some may find the ‘falling asleep forever’ too simplistic of a term for ‘death’. Clear, simple collage and printmaking images are surrounded by large white spaces. Author Teckentrup takes on the difficult but rare subject ever addressed in children’s literature. It is recommended for young children dealing with the loss of a loved one.
