Based on a true story, this historical novel powerfully depicts two star-crossed girls in 1980s Iran whose love is decreed to be immoral and unnatural by a seemingly inhumane government. While sexuality is important to the plot, there is no profanity or graphic descriptions of the friend’s relationship as they face a crime punishable by death. A four-page Author’s Note provides necessary historical backgroud and insight into the persecution of homosexuals today. A book study guide will help encourage discussion among older teens and adults.
