Nothing is as it seems or should be in Eric Carle’s newest book, The Nonsense Show, a picture book for young children. (Pre.K – Gr.3) Every two page spread of classic Carle tissue paper illustrations features a scenario that is wacky, and preposterous…a giant rabbit pulls a man out of the hat, there is a fish in the bird cage and a bird in the fish tank, a human child in the kangaroo pouch, a mouse who catches the cat, a duck with human feet – and on it goes. Children will love studying the illustrations and laughing at the text to discover the things that are mixed up and don’t make sense.
The book cover explains the contents as nonsense that is surreal, i.e. “characterized by fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtapositions”. That is an apt description and Carle has provided children with wonderful concrete examples of this abstract concept of surrealism.
On the final page Carle adds twenty five words that are synonyms for “nonsense” – great words to build vocabulary.
An fun read-aloud….and wonderful new addition to your Eric Carle collection.
