On Our Street: Our First Talk About Poverty

Reviewed by:

On the walk to school today, I saw a man sleeping on the street.
Why would he sleep outside?
The first in a new series called  World Around Us, young readers are able to openly ask tough questions about homelessness and poverty in this compassionate question and answer book.  The explanations are simply told and easy to comprehend for mid to upper elementary readers.  Each two-page layout includes photographs, illustrations, and definitions e.g. homelessness, poverty, orphan, mental illness, education, healthcare, as well as quotes from United Nations, the Canadian Government, and experts about this social issue in our communities.  It ends with asking what we can do to help people living in poverty.  Both the authors, involved with education and child psychology recognize that children have the capacity for empathy and ability to make a difference in the lives of others. Part of the sale of this book goes towards UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Fund).
Ideal for discussing Current Events and Quality of Life in Social Studies classes. It may inspire schools or students to assess how to help solve a social issue in their own community, as part of the Health curriculum or to support Character Education: Compassion.
