Author Josh Allen, who checks for monsters under his bed each night before switching off the lights, takes preteens and reluctant readers from middle school on a creepy adventure through a collection of thirteen imaginative short stories. The nightmarish anthology includes eerie black and white charcoal illustrations by Sarah J. Coleman that add to its spookiness and the weird ambience of the eerie tales. Horror is found in the mundane elements of life, like strange spots on the floors that consume things, sofas that eat people, a street sign that taunts a terrified protagonist, and a shadow that is out to get the unsuspecting hero. Scary scenerios, elements of the supernatural, and dark and sinister secrets make these short page-turners quirky and unsettling but an excellent read-a-loud or choice for those who like to read in short bursts.
