P’ésk’a and the First Salmon Ceremony

Reviewed by:

What if you could go back in time?…a 1000 years ago?
Young readers are invited to reflect upon this question, as they are transported to the village of P’ésk’a, a young Sts’ailes boy, whose tribe lived along the Harrison River for the past ten thousand years.  In which is now part of British Columbia, Canada, young children will learn about an important tradition and ceremony of the Sts’ailes, through sparse text and detailed illustrations.  The salmon, which was an essential food source for the Sts’ailes and their shared lifestyle, are both explained  in the story and in the epilogue at the end of the book.
The cartoon-like characters are attractive to today’s readers who enjoy animation and graphic book formats.  The wooly dog, pictured throughout the book, was once a dog only found in North America and is now extinct.  A glossary of almost extinct Sts’ailes language words and a letter from the Chief of the Sts’ailes people adds to the authenticity of this book. This is a useful resource for introducing historical thinking, one of the key ‘dimensions of thinking’ of the Alberta Social Studies Curriculum.  It is a very useful resource for teaching Alberta’s Grade One Social Studies on traditions and celebrations and Aboriginal perspectives.
