Petra

Petra is a magnificent mountain.
Or is she an egg?
Or an amazing island?
Or is she something else entirely?
Petra, (meaning rock or stone in Greek), thinks she is an unmovable mountain until she discovers else wise.  Suddenly, she is no longer a mountain, but a pebble picked up by a dog, or an egg in a nest, or an island …until she is taken home by a child rock-collecting. Petra realizes she is a foremost a rock and does not worry any longer about her identity in the world. The simple collage artwork and brief text make for a quick but meaningful read about finding one’s own identity. Children may enjoy learning the meaning of their name and how it defines them as unique, after reading this story together.
Suitable for Alberta’s kindergarten and grade one social studies curriculum: I am Unique/Belonging and Grade 3 Science: Rocks & Minerals.
