Raindrops Roll

Reviewed by:

“Rain is coming.  Can you feel it in the air?”
Young readers will enjoy this explanation of rain and how it behaves using sparse, poetic prose and enlarged photographic images.  This book takes something so ordinary in our everyday lives and helps us view rain with wonder and appreciation. Simple, free verse text makes use of strong verbs, making readers aware that rain can be active.
The amazing photography in this book will enchant both young and experienced readers. The most stunning photographs are spread across two pages.  A ‘Splash of Science’ at the back of the book provides scientific explanations about how rain behaves and the water cycle. The explanations are too high of a level for the book’s intended audience.  Parents and teachers will need to moderate this scientific text.
This book is ideal for introducing the season of Spring and the water cycle in a study of weather. It could be used as a model for writing poetic prose about other precipitation e.g. snowflakes or other naturally occurring elements e.g. rocks, dirt, leaves, sand, with an emphasis on using descriptive verbs. It could also be used for teaching photography as an art form.
