I AM NOT COMING OUT! A little seed lies in the ground, determined to stay right where he/she is. It’s dark out there! There might be… MONSTERS! Better to stay in the ground and be alone. Just like the toddler the little seed emulates, he/she becomes bored, and decides to stick out one little root. A passing friendly worm becomes the seed’s mentor, and with the added encouragement of many little bug friends, the seed decides to take the plunge and grow. Hood adds contrast between the seed’s prose and the light, rhyming text of the worm and insect encouragers, helping young readers connect with the seed and feel like the others are cheering him/her on. The gatefolds spread throughout the book add depth and space, creating a feeling of a wide underground world, while the final gatefold shows the dramatic rise of the seed into a tall daisy. Simple, child-like illustrations add to the appeal for young readers. A wonderful book to encourage students who are facing a change in their lives, whether it’s the first day of kindergarten, or graduation day.
