Prolific author Pete Hautman offers a richly narrated laugh-out-loud story of complicated family dynamics and teenage challenges.¬†The protagonist, David, is obsessively focused on competitive eating, and when he accidentally charges two thousand dollars on his mother’s credit card, he decides to train and enter multiple food eating competitions as a fast fix for the expensive mistake. David faces middle- child invisibility, with a brilliant older sister in college, and a younger autistic brother who he takes care of, as well as family drama and changing¬†relationships between his longtime friends. Chapters are cleverly titled with food names, and although descriptions of the contests are graphic and gross at times, the middle school reluctant reader will enjoy David’s struggles and the humor in this engrossing read.
