Some Birds

Reviewed by:

“Some birds are big, some birds are small, and some birds are just incredibly tall.” With Seussian rhyme, Spinks sets the stage for a visual paean to differences among birds. Set on sepia backgrounds, the birds are depicted with strong black lines and bold colours, reminiscent of stained glass windows. The bold and colourful text, no more than one sentence on a page, reflects Spinks’ background in creative advertising and graphic design, as the style and setting of the words reflects their meaning. “Soar high” is written in large blue text, while ‘walk’ is written in green with the letters angled to reflect steps. While the text is more general than informational (Some birds waddle, some birds hop), this allows for an extrapolation to the differences between people as well. A fun and gorgeous read for younger students, and could be used as inspiration for an art activity for grades 4-6.
