Star Stuff: Carl Sagan and the Mysteries of the Cosmos

Reviewed by:

“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.” – Carl Sagan
This is the story of Carl Sagan, the beloved scientist who taught the world to marvel at the mysteries of the cosmos. The story begins by directing us through the cosmos to a small apartment in Brooklyn, New York where the young Carl Sagan was growing up. Sisson captures the important moments of the imaginative and curious young Carl. It starts with his visit to the 1939 World’s Fair where he marveled at a mechanical man and began to wonder about the universe beginning with the stars that hung down “like lightbulbs on long black wires.” Using colourful and lighthearted illustrations and simple text, author-illustrator Stephanie Sisson captures Carl’s earnest desire to learn more about the cosmos. The story follows him through his childhood to his life long study of space as a scientist. Throughout this delightful narrative, the author focuses on the power of imagination and curiosity.
