Still a Work in Progress

Reviewed by:

Prolific author Jo Knowles creates a complicated world with authentic  situations, narrated by Noah, a vulnerable and realistic seventh grader, who guides the contemporary story as he tries to make his way through school, girls, friendships, and emotional family turmoil. This heartfelt issue novel deals with the severe eating disorder relapse of Noah’s sister, Emma, and instills important lessons about silent illness, the power of addictions, and the importance of supporting not only those with devastating conditions, but also their siblings and families. Carrying the guilt and burden of the fear of relapse in someone you love is a challenge for Noah, but despite the seriousness of his insecurities, a humorous subplot with his friends and with a hairless school cat help make the tough issues more accessible for middle school readers as the explore the tricky balancing act of adolescence.
