Summer would be the same and never the same.  Last summer we had a dad and a brother and then they were gone.
Feeling lost after the death of her father and autistic brother, Cedar seeks to find purpose and healing in a summer spent in her mother’s hometown, Iron Creek. Cedar’s life changes when she meets Leo, a quirky friend, who draws her out of herself and into the life of a theatre festival.  As they seek to uncover the clues to the tragic death of one of the town’s former star actresses, they find themselves in increasing trouble with the festival, their families and in their friendship. As Cedar’s mother, younger brother and herself spend the summer away from home, they each learn to process their losses together and separately, in unique ways.
This book, written by the author of the well-received Matched series, explores how friendship and family can bring healing following death.  The book is divided into Acts, in character with the theatrical setting of the story.  It provides a realistic view of how people deal with loss, more through actions than through discussion or thoughtful reflection.

An upper elementary/middle school audience will enjoy this book as there is both a female and male protagonist.
