The Beauty that Remains

Reviewed by:

Have a box of tissues handy for this one: In this moving debut novel by Ashley Woodfolk, we are given three alternating young adult perspectives on grief after they experience three separate tragedies.
Autumn, Shay and Logan have all lost a person they loved deeply and who was an integral piece of their identity. The three are loosely connected together by music from a local band. It was different tragedies over a series of months that resulted in the deaths: one was in a collision; one lost a long battle with leukemia, and one died by suicide. Autumn, Shay and Logan are all lost in their grief. They are drowning while trying to figure out how to cope and feeling like they have to hold it all inside. They each have to find a way to get past the guilt of gaining the life experiences that their loved ones will not.
Autumn sends emails and text messages to her friend who will never be able to respond, while feeling guilty over the budding relationship with her friend’s brother. Shay literally runs from anything that triggers a panic attack and pushes everyone away. Logan is spiraling down a dark path of self destruction and obsessively watches his ex-boyfriend’s videos on social media wondering if he could have changed the outcome. The music that connects them all to each other might be the one thing that can bring them back to living in the present, maybe even be the one thing that can save them from themselves.
This novel is heart-achingly sad, but such a worthy read. It was interesting to see each person come to terms with their loss and how they work towards breaking down barriers to come together for a single purpose.
There is some mature language in this book, suggested drug dealing and drug use, alcohol use, and some sexual scenes.
