A beautifully illustrated picture book about a girl who loves to read fiction. She is inspired by the various stories she has read and takes her teacher’s advice to enter the writing contest. She realizes that as an author, she has to make some tough editing choices. Upper Elementary students will be inspired by The Girl Who Writes. Her perseverance and her careful word crafting pay off after she creates her own written piece. What is beautiful about this book is the Alberta landscape that Canadian artist Richard Cole includes in the illustrations. The Girl Who Writes is a character depicted on a ‘girl cutout’ with handwritten words on it which provides strong imagery. Included on each page is a layered collage which adds to the messages. The reader is challenged to make some inferences and connections to the text using the visual imagery.
