The Loxleys and Confederation

Reviewed by:

How many of us remember ‘covering’ Confederation through the medium of a textbook, memorizing facts and figures as we struggled to understand how our country was founded. Zuehlke and his co-authors continue their successful saga of the fictitious Loxleys ( The Loxleys and the War of 1812) in this new graphic novel about Confederation. George Loxely, a Globe and Mail journalist, travels with his daughter, Ruth, a sketch artist, and granddaughter Lillian to Montreal, Quebec City and Charlottetown as they follow the members of the legislative assembly of Upper Canada on their way to connect with the maritime colonies. Eventually, the trio travels to London to hear the British Parliament debate Confederation. Throughout their journey, they meet with various historical figures and, through conversations, the reader begins to understand, rather than memorize, the events leading up to Canada becoming a country. Not only are events shared, but also the feelings and beliefs of those early Canadians. The “Afterword: Looking for Kanata”, written by Niigaanwewidam James Sinclair, gives readers the often missing piece, the input and exclusion of the First Nations peoples of the time. An excellent resource, told in an accessible form and text, for both Grade 5 and 6 Social Studies on Canada and Government
