As with all of Brett’s works, this one is a sure winner. The classic tale of the giant turnip too big for one person (or many!) to pull out gets the Brett treatment. Set in the Russian countryside in which this tale originated, Badger Girl finds an enormous turnip. Thinking of all those turnip pancakes she could make, she tries to pull it out. Nada. Even with the help of many friends, the turnip stubbornly stays in the ground. While the reader waits for the smallest creature to come along, as we know that this is the one who will turn the tide and get that turnip out of the ground, Brett’s signature Side panels show a parallel story: the left shows a family of bears preparing for their winter nap, the right side shows the next animal to come along. Wonder why the bears are there? Wait until rooster tries to pull the turnip! As always, Brett’s artwork and attention to detail pull the reader into the pages, and her clever take on the tale makes this one a definite winner to add to your fairytale collection.
