When Wolves Howl

Reviewed by:

Against the drop back of Alberta’s mountains, the life of a wolf pack is brought alive through Canadian author/illustrator, Georgia Graham. Readers learn about the roles of different wolves within the pack, as well as the lifestyle of wolves, creating empathy about this often maligned species.  Graham’s classic pastel illustrations are taken to a different level, as the visual perspective from aerial to ground view brings the wolf pack to life. The close ups of the wolves themselves emit a sense of the wolves’ personalities and awe for readers. The end papers are equally as beautiful as the story. Though told in story format, this is actually an informational picture book.
Highly recommended: Alberta’s Grade 4 Social Studies: The Land, the People and History; Alberta’s Grade 3 Science: Animal Life Cycles. Graham’s illustrations provide an excellent example of pastels as an art media for Art teachers.
