World of Work, The

Reviewed by:

Young readers explore a wide range of occupations along with Alfie the dog, who cannot decide whether to be an astronaut, an artist, and a detective. He invites readers along to help him choose a job that might be right for him.  He explores the work worlds from theatre to a space station, with dozens of places to work throughout the book.  What is unique about this book about jobs is both the format and the wide breadth of jobs one might consider besides the traditional roles often named by children, when asked what they want to be when they grow up.  Each two-page spread asks What’s it like working in a….e.g. Museum? Farm? Hospital? with a cutaway scene at a location, as well as the name of the job, eg. Museum – ticket officer, archeologist, restorer, anthropologist, museum attendant, to name a few. On the following pages, it outlines briefly what each job entails.  The cartoon characters, speech bubbles and the hunt for Alfie the dog on each page, makes for engaging reading or browsing.
A list of all the professions by place is located at the beginning of the book, making it suitable for browsing easily.
