You’re a Crab! A Moody Day Book

Reviewed by:

Whitehead’s colourful and friendly ocean creatures help young readers to understand their moods and emotions. Some days they can be a friendly dolphin, a funny clownfish, or a silly jellyfish, but some days, they are a crabby crab. Whitehead goes on to assure readers that it is okay to feel down, to be a ‘stinky anchovy’ or a ‘mopey manatee’. The text then shifts to the narrator making suggestions to cheer the crab out of his/her black mood, such as pretending to be a hammerhead shark and sawfish and building something fun. Finally, the narrator assures the little crab that if nothing will work, they will sit together until he/she feels better. This promise that readers will not be abandoned if they happen to be grouchy or cranky finishes the book on an upbeat and comforting note. Great for recognizing and  talking about emotions
